The History of Schweissguth Bros.,Inc.
Schweissguth Bros., Inc. was established May 21, 1929, by Theophil and William Schweissguth in Dutzow. Starting out as a blacksmith shop, the company soon moved into the implement business as well. In 1934, a contract was established with John Deere Plow Company which allowed them to sell John Deere plows and other implements, but not tractors. Sometime after that, a Massey Harris contract was obtained for the selling of tractors, but was dropped after John Deere agreed to a tractor contract in 1937. The business grew and the company moved into its second location in 1940. This building still stands in the center of Dutzow.
This building saw many changes throughout its lifetime. Hydraulics and three point hitch systems standardized attaching of equipment. Power steering became very popular. One of the most significant changes was the elimination of the John Deere two cylinder tractor.
This time period also brought Roy Schweissguth and William Schweissguth Jr.into the family business. The business continued to prosper under their guidance and expansion became necessary. The business was relocated to its third location in 1968.
To meet challenges in the industry, additional lines were added throughout the years to benefit the farming customer as well as the company. Some of these lines included Bush Hog, Sunflower, Great Plains and Artsway. It was felt that these lines offer quality products that compliment the existing John Deere line.
In these days, there are fewer farmers in our trade area. In recent years, farmland has been lost to the expanding metropolitan area. Our proximity to the St. Louis area has created new oppurtunities to serve the part-time farmer and homeowner. This market has increased the sale of small tractors and lawn and garden equipment tremendously. The 80's saw this market grow at a rapid pace; so, to take full advantage of this shift in customer base, a second store location was added in 1987 in Union, Missouri. It concentrates its efforts on small tractors, lawn & garden equipment, and hand held products.
Today, the product mix is much different than it was 60 years ago. The John Deere Lawn & Garden division was launched in 1963 with the model 110 tractor. It has grown to over 50 different models today, and all are designed for lawn and garden grounds care. 1995 brought another major addition to the business. Kubota, another major manufacturer of tractors and equipment, was added giving us an even larger selection. The Great Plains and Landpride lines were also added about this time.
Today the company is now owned by the third generation of the Schweissguth family. 1999 marked the 70th anniversary of the company in a new state-of-the-art 25,000 sq. ft. facility. Again, this expansion became necessary due to the continued growth of the dealership.
The company has seen many changes over the years, and is prepared for the many challenges it will face in the years to come. Thanks for visiting our site, and please stop in to see for yourself the many qualities the company possesses, which makes it stand apart from the rest for over 70 years.
